Teaching Approach

Most math programs give you a specific approach to use for every child. However, Math on the Level is based on the idea that each child is unique. When you prepare to teach a concept, you can choose whether to start with real-life activities, such as those found in Math Adventures, or use some of the ideas in the Teaching Guides. The Teaching Guides explain each teaching objective and give suggestions for how to explain the concept. As you work with your child, you can discover whether it works best to present new concepts by instruction, by demonstration, or by letting the child explore and discover for himself using manipulatives. Math on the Level gives you a variety of ideas and approaches to help you teach in the way each child learns best.

To see how this works, read through the sample page for Average (or Mean) from the Operations Teaching Guide.
